Your reading journey mirrors mine--exactly. And I love the idea of keeping books close. I have a pile by my bed as does each of my kids. The library and used book stores are some of my FAVORITE places on earth. In fact, I haven't purchased an e-reader yet because a physical book is such a beautiful thing to me, so if I were to buy an e-book and love it, I would also want it as a traditional book (so I can stare at in my book collection, which makes me very happy, as well as read it again and again--and loan the book to friends). Great post, Deva.

Did you read the other True Game books and the Marianne books too? They're such odd-- almost surreal-- little books but they have some really nifty worldbuilding. I still prefer True Game and Marianne to her later work, though I recall being blown away by parts of BEAUTY.

Glad to help! And seriously, speaking as an author, if someone was trying to read one of my books and not feeling into it, I'd want them to stop. Of course I'd love it if they tried again later but I'd hate to think of anyone reading my book and resenting it. :-)

I was lucky in that my college had generous collection of misc. fiction in the dorm common rooms--that's where I read that Sheri Tepper series!

Wow. You are my savior. Now I can actually stop reading a book if I don't like it. When I do stop, I feel like I've commited some horrible crime. I imagine I've hurt the book's feelings.Or I think, "What if I met this author and she asked if I had read her book? I would most likely say yes. She would ask if I liked it. Super awkward. I would give her a toothy grin and say, 'Weather's nice, huh?' " I do relize that the author would probably know that not everyone is going to like her books. Yet I still feel guilty. Not anymore!! Thank. You.

It's also why I love reading other writer-blogs, to remind myself of these things I so easily forget!

Oh! The way you talk about writing this down now so you can look back next time--YES! There are days when I know that's why I blog, so I can see where I've been, where I'm going, what I've done, and what I need to do.

And those designs. Just wow.

His stuff really is amazing -- I had not realized, also, that he helped design the UN building in NYC!

Oscar Niemeyer! So glad you posted about him, as his stuff is really amazing. I saw one of his buildings in an image but couldn't place it, and now I can finally Google his name! Thanks.
